Mainly employers have gaps in their establishment that need filling and especially in some of the below positions they can be high absenteeism making the hours ad hoc and you are sometimes not always able to plan around your college timetable.

There are various jobs out there for College Students and mostly they involve some kind of Customer Service either on a face to face basis or on the telephone. Some of the roles that students end up doing are as listed below.

#1 A Barista in a coffee shop

The role of a Barista is one of the first rungs on the ladder working in a coffee shop and an ideal position for a student as it doesn’t require specific skills and you will be trained as you go along.

#2 Bar Work

Another obvious role to do part time as a student and bar work will mainly be in the evenings and weekends so not interfering with your timetable.

#3 Call centre work

You could get a few part time shifts working in a Call Centre maybe working for one of the banks or utility companies making outbound calls or taking inbound calls from customers.

#4 Take away

Working in a Takeaway again can be done in the evenings so will not interfere with any lectures or work that needs to be done. You will need to be organised and be able to deal with the crowds at the end of the night.

#5 Cashier

Working for a supermarket or shop as a cashier can be done as a part time role covering various shifts, operating a till and even stacking shelves in a smaller store.

Working as a Waiter or Waitress can be done day or night depending on the place that you work for. You can do this role with little previous experience, the right attitude and some experience of dealing with customers.

Handing out leaflets in a town centre or a particular area is a part time role that you could get involved in that requires no experience and varied hours and work depending on the company that wants something distributing.

Working part time doing Telesales calls is a part time role whereby you will have a list of people to call and offer them a product or service depending on the company that you work for. As long as you can deal with people saying no this is a relatively straight forward role.

#11 Cleaner

Working as a cleaner for a company means that this role can be done in the evenings or at set periods if cleaning a person’s house.  Office cleaning is generally done out of office hours which is ideal for most students.

#12 Car Cleaning

You could work for one of the many car cleaning service companies, washing and valeting cars. A company will be looking for attention to detail and a like for cleaning and making cars look good.

#13 Fast Food Outlet

You could also work at one of the many fast food outlets who stay busy for most periods of the day and night serving customers and helping to prepare fast food.

#14 Cinema

Working in a cinema dealing with customers buying tickets and showing them to the screen that they are going to or serving refreshments, this can be done on a part time basis, day or night to suit.

#15 Deliveries

You could work part time doing deliveries for a parcel company or a private company if you have your own transport or can get about easily.

Have a look at the job centre and have a chat with an employment adviser to see if there is any training available to boost your skills and improve your chances of securing some employment. Any extra training that you can do will add to your skill set and give an employer something else to know about you and what you can do for them.

Talking to an employment adviser at the job centre may help you with deciding what you can do with the skills you have which could be from school or college.  The job centre may be able to help you with a placement, work experience etc which could lead to a job.

Do any of your friends or family know any employers that would be prepared to give you a chance and see if you are able to gain some experience by working with them? It’s always worth asking as people know more people than you realise and could help.

# Look for apprentice roles

Once you have an idea what you are hoping to do, start looking for companies that want to take on apprentices and will train them up and help them to learn about their business. This is easy if you know what you want to do but remember you need to come across well as being an apprentice at a company is a big investment for a company investing in your future.

# Take your CV and covering letter to local businesses

If you live somewhere where you can drop in your CV and covering letter at local businesses in the hope that one of them might look to take you on then by doing speculative applications will help your job search greatly.
