Interview Hints and Questions for Civil Engineer
A Civil Engineer isn’t created overnight. There isn’t just a “eureka” moment when a Civil Engineer is born. This is a career path needing aptitude and good examination results from school, followed by a three year university degree course leading to a qualification of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or a four year Masters degree (MEng).
A Civil Engineer is involved with the planning, design and the management of construction projects. There are many different organisations which employ Civil engineers and the duties are extremely wide-ranging. The job will require some office based work, but there may also be extensive travelling, even overseas, depending on the specific contract being worked on at the time.
Civil Engineering is a career which requires excellent IT skills, maths and science together with the talent to not only have the design ideas, but the ability to explain them to other people. It is essential to be able to work within specific budgets and to deadlines.
It is possible to train to be a Civil Engineer without following the usual academic route. Someone already working within the industry as an engineering technician could have the opportunity to study part-time for a BTEC HNC/HND which could lead to qualification.
Preparing for an Interview
A new graduate Civil Engineer will often work for a company which has its own training programme. During the first two years the newly qualified employee will have the opportunity to work on many different projects under the guidance of a mentor. As they gain in confidence and experience then they will be given more responsibility.

It is important to arrange interviews as quickly as possible after completing the university course. Spend some time in researching the type of organisation in which you think will best complement not only your skills, but your personality. You may have already sent a copy of your CV to the company, but take a copy of it to the interview, so that you can pass it to the interviewer if required.
Always wear a suit when going to an interview. You are applying for a professional position so you must present yourself accordingly. Concentrate on the interviewer and listen carefully to questions. Make sure that you have looked at the company website, so that, at the appropriate time you are able to ask one or two relevant questions.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer and shake hands firmly. Make a specific comment that you will be delighted to accept if they offer you the position.
